Norweigans in Contin Project Update

A frosty examination of stable remains, with thanks to Libby Whittome for access. In 1942-3 the Norwegian Horse Service was based at Coul House. Over 200 horses were transported from Dumfries, to be trained for use as pack animals and for drawing carts. They were intended to be used by the Norwegian Independent Mountain companies who would be involved in the liberation of Norway. No wartime buildings remain, but some of the stable foundations survive.

The Norwegians in Contin in WWII project has uncovered a lot of information about the Norwegians in the Contin area during the war, some part of the Horse Service and others as part of Independent Mountain companies. The results of the project will be on display on Saturday 18th January, 11 am – 4pm at Contin Hall. Do drop in and see what we’ve discovered – free, refreshments available, all welcome!
